The Challenge
The client wanted a miniature replica of their actual 2001 Toyota Corolla figure-8 demolition derby car — car #18, driven by Doherty, sponsored by Canadian Waterfowl Supplies. The car is a one-of-a-kind machine covered in hand-painted Duck Hunt pixel art, a live Canada goose decoy in the cabin, a roof-mounted number sign, and real race damage including crumpled fenders, torn panels, and deep battle dents. The challenge: recreate all of that character — including the imperfections — at miniature scale.
How We Built It
Using a 3D-printed base model as the foundation, every surface detail was hand-painted to mirror the real car as closely as possible. The iconic blue body with pixel-art green grass, the Duck Hunt dog pixel character on the door, the orange number "18" lettering, and the neon yellow-green undergrowth were all replicated by hand. Special attention was paid to the battle damage: dented quarter panels, a crumpled front bumper, and scraped bodywork were sculpted and painted into the model to match the real car's race scars. A Canada Goose figurine was added to the rear deck, and the signature orange rollbar bracket and roof number board were built and mounted to match the original.
